Contents • • • • History Vectorworks was previously known as MiniCAD. It was originally developed on and became available to Windows computers from MiniCAD 6. With version 8, it became MiniCAD Vectorworks, and with version 8.5 in 1999 in lost its MiniCAD name. It was developed by, now Nemetschek Vectorworks, Inc. Alongside MiniCAD, Diehl Graphsoft also released a 2D CAD program for the Mac targeted toward architects called Blueprint. Pros: Vectorworks Architect is the only industry modeling, design and documentation software created with BIM from the basics of the design process. Edit and analyze your model while simultaneously generating interactive schedules. The version numbers went up to 12 and are numbered from 2008 and on by the year (i.e. Currently 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012). The data files used the MCD extension (from MiniCAD) until version 12. Vectorworks 2008 and onwards use the VWX extension. Vectorworks 2011 was launched in September 2010. It was replaced in in September 2011 by Vectorworks 2012. See also • References. ![]() Header Artwork by Important Info Upcoming AMAs All AMAs listed in eastern time zone. I need to learn one specifically for scenic design, but I want to know the benefits of each. I like the 3D capabilities of Vectorworks, but if I'm more likely to be employed using AutoCAD, well, then. Fuck Vectorworks. Secondary: Do you recommend a place online to learn these programs? Free is preferred of course, but I'll hear all options! Did you take a class? Have any homework assignments that you found really useful to do? Or a book that really helped? Price doesn't need to be factored in here. I'm not sure which one is more expensive, but I have both (free student versions! TAKE THAT WORLD). Edit: Thanks for all the feedback everyone! Sounds like there's a split on what's best. A few people are saying AutoCAD for scenic and VW for lighting. But apparently the mac version of AutoCAD leaves something to be desired, and I use mac. So it seems I'll try my hand at VW first. But I do like the idea of knowing both! Vectorworks for Lighting and Design Work. AutoCAD for TD work. But this is a personal choice. I can knock out Technical Drawings in no time on Autocad. I always see people struggling with Vectorworks, yet they claim it's better. I taught myself AutoCAD. All you need are your settings to be right and you can type everything in. Seriously, all you need is 'XL'V' - Endless Vertical Line 'XL'H' - Endless Horizontal Line 'O' for offset 'Trim' for trim. 'L' for line 'C' for circle. 'Arc' for arc With those commands you can literally create anything you'd ever need. It couldn't be easier. And it prompts you through each command if you need it. The industry standard is becoming Vectorworks though, go figure. My college program trained me on AutoCAD and I used it for TDing for 8 years. When I started my current job (at a university) I had to switch to VectorWorks because we couldn't afford even the educational license of ACAD (which is now free). I would still prefer to use ACAD because I feel like I can draft about 10%-15% faster with it. That being said, VW is perfectly fine for TD draftings and I like the UI and workflow a bit better; add in the fact that it handles lighting really well (including LightWright integration) and its a solid contender against ACAD even if it takes a bit longer to draft with.
